  • Whole-home surge protection
— What it is

What is a panel upgrade?

Your electrical panel is the central hub that distributes power throughout your home. If your house was built before 1990, there's a good chance you're running a 100-amp — or even 60-amp — panel designed for a different era, before central air, EV chargers, home offices, and induction cooktops drew power all at once.

A panel upgrade replaces it with a modern, higher-capacity unit — typically 200 amps — that safely handles today's demand and tomorrow's. It's not just more capacity. It's safety: outdated Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or Pushmatic panels are known fire hazards.

At Heliotek, panel upgrades are our bread and butter. We're licensed electricians first — this is core electrical work, and we treat it that way. Every upgrade is engineered for what your home needs today and what you're planning next.

Signs you might need an upgrade

  • Breakers tripping frequently — or a fuse box instead of breakers
  • A panel rated under 200 amps
  • A Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or Pushmatic panel
  • Visible corrosion, scorching, or burn marks
  • Planning solar, an EV charger, a heat pump, or an addition

Every home is different. What moves the price: meter box and service-mast condition, wire-run distance, grounding-system requirements, panel location, existing wiring condition, municipal permit fees ($100–$500), and utility-coordination timeline. We never surprise you with hidden fees — your written quote includes everything: materials, labor, permits, and inspection. You're paying for licensed electricians, one in-house crew with no subcontractors, and a job that's permitted, inspected, and signed off by our master electrician.

— Why Heliotek

Why homeowners choose Heliotek

Most "panel upgrade" quotes come from a low-bid crew. Here's what a premium electrical contractor does differently.

🛡️

Master-electrician approved

Every job is done by licensed electricians and reviewed, approved, and signed off by our master electrician — every single one. The same credentials that keep your home safe are what keep your manufacturer warranties valid.

👷

One crew — panel to project

No subcontractors, no handoffs. The same crew that upgrades your panel can install your solar, EV charger, or battery. One permit, one team, one point of contact.

Engineered for what's next

We don't just swap to 200 amps and walk away. We plan for your future — reserved breaker space, pre-run conduit, and capacity for solar, batteries, EV chargers, and heat pumps.

— FAQ

Panel upgrades, answered

Why does a premium upgrade cost more than the cheapest quote?
Because you're not getting a low-bid panel swap. Every Heliotek job is done by licensed electricians, reviewed and signed off by our master electrician, pulled and inspected to code, and handled by one in-house crew — no subcontractors. That's what keeps your home safe and your equipment warranties valid. A cheap panel job that fails inspection — or your insurer — costs far more than doing it right once.
How long does a panel upgrade take?
Most residential upgrades are completed in one day. Full-service upgrades that include meter-box replacement and utility coordination may need a brief second visit after the utility sets new service. We handle all scheduling and coordination.
Do I need a permit — and will it pass inspection?
Yes. Every panel upgrade requires a municipal electrical permit and inspection. We pull all permits and schedule inspections as part of every job, and we don't consider the work finished until it's signed off by the authority having jurisdiction. The permit fee ($100–$500 depending on your town) is included in your quote.
Will I lose power during the upgrade?
Yes — there's a planned outage during the panel swap, typically 4–6 hours. We coordinate with the utility and give you advance notice so you can plan. Sensitive electronics should be unplugged beforehand.
Can you bundle the upgrade with solar or an EV charger?
Absolutely — this is where Heliotek shines. Because we're licensed electricians and solar/EV installers, we bundle your panel upgrade with solar, EV-charger, or battery work in a single project: one permit, one crew, one timeline — usually at a lower total cost than hiring two companies.
Do you serve my area?
We serve all of New England — Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine. Call us or request a quote and we'll confirm scheduling for your location.
